It seems there is no shortage of people wanting to leave the UK, and that is not a recent development: Lawrence Durrell did not even have UK citizenship. I tried to read some of his books before and found them hard going (unlike those of other expatriate-minded Brits such as Graham Greene - I loved just about everything I read by him, and his Quiet American is spot on as far as the American ‘do-good’ Puritanical psyche is concerned - or John Fowles - loved his Magus, it is truly a grand book), but I might give him another try. Perhaps this would help?

Look them up. They are the kind of magnificent fools who make this world a breathable place.
